Back Then... We Needed No Throwbacks
Once in a while, nostalgia hits you like it could be the
best thing to happen. I mean seriously, it is better to be hit by a truck down
the street (Though today sometimes we feel a truck runs us over than facing an idiot). So while I was doing some work, I remembered a sentence uttered by
my teachers, “I’m going to the Principal’s office and coming, till then row
monitors, mind your rows.” That.
That feeling of having something to control; 7-8 benches a
max. We would proudly get up from our seats and stand in front of the row. They
were our friends but we had to stop them from talking. Saying, “Hey don’t talk”
or just doing a finger on the lips action. It was such a difficult task back
then. Don’t even get me started on the number of fights we have had over who
gets to be the row monitor. Class monitor was such a respectful position.
Cut to the present! Senior Correspondent/ PR Executive /
Business Manager / *your post* but respect, hardly any. We reached a point
where some of us are leading teams or training our juniors. But do we have the
proud control? Rarely.
From minding rows to now minding own business we have sure
come a long way. And seriously now we realize, minding rows was much easier. Today
we have become pokey noses in other’s business, because ours is an everyday
story to deal with. We want to know what he/she is doing. We are competing with
our friends. We are comparing salaries, why?
If we come back to the present, in terms of today’s classrooms,
the scene is pathetically modern. So when I overhear 12-14 year-olds talking
about ‘item’ and to know it is not a mathematical problem, I feel bad. I mean at
that age, wasn’t Math supposed to be the only problem tackled, with a number of
items reducing or adding or something on those lines. Today these children are referring
to a certain girl as item. All of them carry smart-phones and I swear their
scores on candy crush saga, makes me whine more on this current state saga!
These children won’t know the beauty of ‘colour colour which
colour do you want?’ simply because they’ve photo filters available to them at
ease. A sepia would be light brown or an azure would be the bluish tinge or a
cross process would mean darkening with greens. For us, auto only meant a
sophisticated way of calling a rickshaw. Not hiding those pimples or spotty
skin. Sigh!
Minding rows, I would love to get back there. Sit on those
benches with my gang and making fun over handwriting. Those were the days, when we didn't need a #Throwback, every day was good enough. Today even talking to
your best-friends involve how job sucks, or how family is unhappy. For girls, indecent
proposals for marriage have become a past-time. Caught in turmoil of
quarter-life crisis while the next gen is beating you at system updates! Teach them
someone to eat dirt, like actual dirt and not roaming with girls who have
become fond of waxing at an early age. Yikes, it still hurts me when my parlour
lady is about to pull the strip.
